I am Aishat Aderonke Salami, a graduate of the Foreign Languages Department, specialising in Portuguese and English, in the Faculty of Arts. My journey through LASU was a beautiful mix of growth, exploration, challenges, and self-discovery.
Serving in different leadership positions is what I'm proudest of, those experiences gave me the chance to grow, discover more about myself, and develop my leadership skills while contributing to my community. I served as an Honourable Member representing the Foreign Languages Constituency in the 33rd FASA-LASU SRC, as 3rd Sergeant-at-Arms of the FLASAN-LASU SRC, and volunteered with the LASUSU Legal Team for two consecutive sessions, alongside roles as Clerk and later Speaker of FLASAN and Librarian of the LASU Christian Fellowship.
Figuring out my interests and direction beyond my degree was my biggest challenge, my course was actually changed on the sixth week of resumption, and it was hard understanding anything at first because my heart wasn't in it. The importance of showing up, even when you don't feel ready or confident, is the lesson I'll carry for life, sometimes you simply have to do it afraid. I won the Best Parliamentarian of the Year Award for FLASAN in both 2023 and 2025, among several other certificates for leadership and volunteering.
The person I am becoming, and the life I want to build, has been my biggest source of inspiration, alongside my lecturers and close circle of friends.
My advice to current and incoming students: find what works for you, be curious, and be willing to explore, enjoy the trouble, you'll miss every stressful 8am class eventually. As I remind myself often: being ready is a myth, you start, you figure it out, and you get better, que sera sera.
